When is the best time to visit the Riviera Maya?
The Riviera Maya works well year-round — but depending on when you go, the experience can be very different. Here's what to expect each season.
High season: December – April
This is the most popular time and for good reasons. The weather is dry, sunny, with temperatures between 24°C and 30°C. The beaches are at their best and underwater visibility is spectacular.
Ideal for: families, honeymoons, snorkeling and diving.
Downside: prices are the highest of the year, and the most touristy spots (Chichén Itzá, popular cenotes) are very crowded. Book in advance.
Christmas and New Year's
The week from December 23 to January 2 is the most expensive of the year. Hotels book up months in advance. If you can avoid it, do. If not, book 4-6 months ahead for the best prices.
Easter Week
Second high season. Mainly Mexican travelers. Prices rise and the beaches of Playa del Carmen and Isla Mujeres fill with locals, creating a very festive atmosphere.
Shoulder season: May and November
These are the most underrated months to travel. The heat starts to rise (or drop) but there's still good weather. Prices drop 20-30% compared to high season and there are far fewer people.
May is especially good: the sea is calm, the vegetation is lush from the last rains, and temperatures are high but manageable.
November has perfect beach days with a refreshing breeze.
Low season: June – October
Rainy season. Rain is usually intense but short (an hour or two in the afternoons), leaving mornings clear for activities. Prices can drop up to 40%.
July and August are popular among European families and those with school-age kids on summer break. There's tourist activity but without the December crowds.
September and October are the months with the highest hurricane risk and fewest tourists. If price is your priority and you have flexibility to change dates, this is when you'll find the best deals.

Our recommendation
If you have flexibility, May or November are the perfect months. Good weather, reasonable prices, and no crowds. If your only option is December–January, plan and book at least 3 months in advance to secure the best prices.
